How ScrollEngine Hit the 1,000 Shopify Delivery Milestone

In November 2025, ScrollEngine announced it could optimize 1,000 Shopify orders in one batch, across drivers, zones and cities in a single run. Here is how batch route planning works and how to run a high-volume delivery day.

In November 2025, ScrollEngine reached a milestone: its route optimization planned 1,000 Shopify orders in one batch. One route plan took the whole set and spread it across drivers, zones and cities in a single optimization run, with no splitting by hand first. This post explains what that milestone means for a store with a busy delivery day, how ScrollEngine plans a batch that size, and the steps to run a high-volume local delivery day on Shopify.

What the 1,000-order milestone means

Planning a delivery day used to mean planning it in pieces. A dispatcher split the orders by area or by driver, optimized each piece on its own, and then fixed the overlaps by hand. That works on a quiet day. On a day with several hundred orders, the splits are where time and fuel leak away: two drivers working the same street, a van that runs out of room halfway through its route, or a booked time window that nobody can reach.

Planning 1,000 orders in one batch removes that step. For a high-volume store, it means:

  • One plan for the whole day. Every order for the day goes into a single plan instead of a stack of separate routes.
  • Every driver at once. The plan assigns stops across all of your drivers, so the solver decides who takes which stop instead of a guess made up front.
  • Zones and cities in the same run. Multi-zone and multi-city setups don't need separate planning sessions.
  • Fewer manual fixes. You review and adjust the plan instead of building it stop by stop.

Why big delivery batches are hard to plan

Simple route tools optimize the stop order of one driver's route. Google's legacy Directions API, for example, allows at most 25 waypoints per request, according to Google's usage and billing documentation as of October 2026. That's fine for one van and a couple of dozen stops. A busy delivery day is a different problem: hundreds of stops, many drivers, and limits on every one of them.

  • Customers booked time windows at checkout, and each one has to be met.
  • Drivers have shifts and breaks, and a route can't run past the end of a shift.
  • Vehicles have capacity: weight, item count, or a maximum number of stops.
  • Live traffic changes which order of stops is fastest.

A multi-driver problem with all of these constraints needs a different kind of solver from a single-route optimizer. It's also where the money is. According to AlixPartners' 2026 Home Delivery Survey, 83% of retail executives say their per-package delivery costs rose year over year. AlixPartners, Great Expectations: 2026 Home Delivery Survey (Jun 2026) How well you plan each route is one of the few delivery cost levers you control directly.

How ScrollEngine plans a 1,000-order day

ScrollEngine's route optimization Live, which you run from the route planner, chooses the method that fits each job and uses the lowest-cost method that can handle it:

The jobHow ScrollEngine plans it
One driver, a short route, only traffic or toll settingsFast waypoint optimization of the stop order
Several drivers, many stops, or any constraint such as time windows, shifts, breaks or capacityAn advanced multi-vehicle solver that assigns and orders stops across every driver
Optimization without advanced routing settingsA separate optimization service that orders the stops in the background
A route you've already put in orderManual planning: your stop order stays as it is, and ETAs and distance are calculated for it

The multi-vehicle solver and route constraints are part of advanced routing, which depends on your plan. With it, the solver plans within the limits you set:

  • delivery time windows that customers booked at checkout;
  • driver shifts, breaks and a maximum route duration;
  • vehicle capacity by weight, item count or number of stops;
  • live traffic, with tolls avoided if you choose.

The route planner shows a distance and time preview before you dispatch, so you can check the plan before drivers see it.

Each plan is solved fresh, within the constraints you set, using live traffic, so every result traces back to constraints you can inspect.

How to plan a high-volume delivery day, step by step

A 1,000-order batch is the middle of the day's work. Good results depend on what happens before it and after it.

  1. Cap the day at checkout. Capacity-aware delivery slots let you set how many orders each slot and each day can take, so the day you sell matches the day your drivers can run. Set them up with the delivery date picker.
  2. Send each order to the right location. Location rules assign every order to the store or warehouse that should fulfill it, by ZIP code, drawn zone, radius, tags or location priority. This matters most when one plan covers several locations.
  3. Build one batch. Select the day's shipments, add your drivers, set your constraints and optimize. Our help guide shows how to optimize routes for multiple drivers.
  4. Review and rebalance. Move stops between routes on one map with the multi-route editor Early access. Our bulk route editing tips cover the common fixes.
  5. Dispatch. Assign routes to drivers yourself, or use automated dispatch Early access. It offers orders to nearby on-duty drivers, ranked by cost and load, and whichever driver accepts first takes the order.
  6. Run the day and keep customers informed. Drivers follow their routes in the driver app and capture proof of delivery with a photo, a signature and notes. Routes can still change after they start, and ETAs are recalculated. Dispatchers follow every driver on the live driver map in the standalone web dashboard, with at-risk alerts before a delivery runs late. Customers get email, SMS and WhatsApp updates.

Delivery and pickup in the same operation

A high-volume day rarely means delivery alone. Many stores run store pickup from the same locations. ScrollEngine treats both as one operation:

  • Pickup orders move through a simple workflow: preparing, ready, picked up.
  • Customers get a ready-for-pickup notification as soon as staff mark the order ready.
  • Pickup slots have daily and per-slot capacity limits, so you can cap the pickup counter's workload on the same day your drivers carry a full plan.

Every order shows up in one dashboard, whether it leaves in a van or over the counter.

What a big batch still needs from you

A batch planner is only as good as what you feed it. Before your busiest days:

  • Clean addresses. Orders are geocoded automatically, on your own Google Maps Platform key. For vague addresses, a pin-drop link lets the customer confirm the exact location before the driver sets out.
  • Real constraints. Enter actual shift times, breaks and vehicle limits. A plan built on guesses produces routes that look good and fail on the road.
  • Enough drivers. Optimization can't create capacity. If the day's orders exceed what your fleet can carry, cap your slots at checkout instead of overloading routes.

Final thoughts

The 1,000-order milestone came down to one thing: planning a whole delivery day in one batch instead of in pieces. With advanced routing, the plan respects your time windows, shifts and vehicles. Drivers run it from an app. Customers see where their order is. Your team can review the full day in one place.
