Why One App Beats Two: Simplifying Local Delivery & Pickup in Shopify

For Shopify stores that deliver or offer pickup, one app beats two: one checkout widget, one calendar with limits per location, routes built from booked slots, a driver app and one tracking flow, with nothing to sync.

One app beats two for Shopify local delivery and pickup: the slots customers book at checkout become the routes your drivers run, with nothing to sync in between. A two-app stack (a scheduling app for checkout plus a separate route planner) puts a handoff between those steps, and every handoff is a place where orders, capacity and customer updates drift apart. Here's where the split costs you, how ScrollEngine runs the whole flow in one app, and how to switch.

Why Shopify stores end up with two apps

Shopify's built-in options are free and a fair place to start. As of October 2026, Shopify's help pages describe local delivery as zones by postal code or radius, with delivery prices, minimum order amounts and delivery instructions, and local pickup as a list of locations with a processing time chosen from a drop-down. Neither page describes letting customers choose a delivery or pickup date and time slot.

So stores add a scheduling app for checkout. When the number of vans grows, they add a route planner. A common pairing on the Shopify App Store, as of October 4, 2026:

  • Zapiet ‑ Pickup + Delivery adds a date and time picker for pickup, local delivery and shipping, with zones, rates and order limits. For routes and drivers, Zapiet's route optimization page points merchants to partner apps, EasyRoutes among them.
  • EasyRoutes Local Delivery adds route optimization and a driver app, with photo and e-signature proof on its Premium plan, and its listing names Zapiet among the apps it works with.

Both are well-reviewed apps that do their own job well. The cost is in the gap between them, and it grows with every driver and location you add.

Where two apps create friction

  • Two records of every order. The scheduling app holds the date and slot; the routing app imports the order. Edits and cancellations have to reach both.
  • Slot limits and drivers live apart. Limits are set in the scheduling app, while drivers and vehicles are set in the routing app, so someone has to keep the two consistent by hand.
  • Two customer experiences. Confirmation comes from one system and tracking from another, often with different branding.
  • Two dashboards for staff. Pickup orders sit in one place, deliveries in another, and nobody sees the whole day.
  • Two plans, two setups and two support teams, which matters most when something breaks on your busiest day.

None of this is a fault of either app. It's what happens whenever two tools have to share one order.

How ScrollEngine runs delivery and pickup in one app

ScrollEngine's app, Local Delivery + Pickup Date:S, covers the whole local flow on Shopify:

  • Checkout: a delivery-method chooser in the cart, cart drawer and product page, with a ZIP, address or map-pin check, and dates and time slots from each location's calendar. A no-code configurator matches it to your theme.
  • Slot limits: a limit for each delivery and pickup slot and each day, with cutoffs, prep time and blackout dates.
  • Locations: zones by ZIP code, radius or drawn area, delivery rates per zone or rule, and rules that send each order to the right store.
  • Routes: route optimization for multiple drivers from the booked slots, around time windows, shifts, breaks and vehicle capacity.
  • Drivers: an iOS and Android driver app with a photo, a signature and notes as proof of delivery.
  • Customers: a branded live tracking page, plus email, SMS and WhatsApp updates.
  • Pickup: a preparing, ready, picked-up workflow with a ready-for-pickup message.

Why a clear cart widget matters

The widget is more than convenience. In Baymard Institute's checkout research (list updated September 22, 2025), 20% of shoppers who abandoned an order during checkout said delivery was too slow, and 12% said they couldn't see or calculate the total order cost up front (Baymard Institute). Showing the method, date, slot and delivery fee in the cart answers "when will it arrive?" and "what will it cost?" before checkout begins, and the same answers flow straight into your routes.

Start with the parts you need

One app doesn't mean switching everything on at once:

  • Pickup today, delivery later? Run ScrollEngine for pickup alone, with locations, pickup slots, capacity and the cart widget. Delivery zones, routes and the driver app stay off until you add drivers.
  • Delivering already? Turn on zones and delivery slots, then invite your drivers to the driver app before you plan routes.
  • Orders from outside Shopify? Phone and marketplace orders can come in by CSV and go on the same routes as your Shopify orders.

Seven questions to choose between one app and two

  1. Do you deliver with your own drivers?
  2. Do you offer both delivery and pickup, or deliver from more than one location?
  3. Do busy days fill up faster than your drivers can cover?
  4. Do staff re-enter or reconcile orders between apps?
  5. Do customers get messages from more than one system?
  6. Do you need proof of delivery to settle "it never arrived" disputes?
  7. Do you want one place to see the whole day?

Three or more "yes" answers point to one app. As you grow, the case gets stronger; our local delivery scale strategies show why.

How to switch from two apps to one

  1. List what each app does today: zones, slots, limits, cutoffs, rates, notifications and driver steps.
  2. Start with locations and zones, then slots and limits, then notifications. The setup checklist walks through the order.
  3. Plan for orders already booked. Decide how orders with future dates from the old app will be delivered, and pick a quiet switch date.
  4. Test end to end on an unpublished copy of your theme, next to the old apps: book a slot, build a route, deliver with photo proof and open the tracking page.
  5. Switch on a quiet weekday, and remove the old apps' widgets once the last old-slot orders are delivered, so shoppers never see two choosers at checkout.

Conclusion: simplify local delivery and pickup

If you deliver with your own drivers or offer store pickup, especially from more than one location, one app is the simpler way to run it. With ScrollEngine you get:

  • a cart widget that makes delivery and pickup choices clear, with limits per location
  • route optimization built from the slots customers booked
  • one driver app, one tracking page and one dashboard for delivery and pickup
